A dedicated group of over 80 volunteers came together at the H.Clay Presnell Park in Seagrove , NC and planted 130 trees in eight hours !! It could not have happened without Mike Walker and his Miracle Equipment - and five hours of hard digging. And all the Volunteers and Trees Asheboro and Trees Seagrove and Polar Bears International and the NC Zoo and all the donated trees and supplies from local greenhouses .

Just seeing all the efforts come together and the incredible results was breathtaking. There, before our eyes , was an entirely new Grove where only empty grass was before. A whole golden aura of forever expanding goodness was created to touch lives in ways we won't ever see. We just know it happens. We were all privileged to be a part of it.

Now we have a responsibility to the trees to make sure they are watered and grow straight and tall . Thanks to Mother Nature for allowing rain for two weeks in a row to allow time to implement a watering regime to start in the Spring. With water from the Seagrove Water District and water tanks from local farmers we will be able to supply the needed soakings to encourage our trees to grow and prosper.

If you missed the initial planting , there is still room for anybody who wants to be a part of this momentous effort to create a new Grove for the future of Seagrove and all the surrounding inhabitants. We will be needing some help to water and stake trees later in the year. Please click on "Contact" on the side of this page if you want to be involved.

Knowing you are gifting all living things with the creation of oxygen through photosynthesis is more rewarding than any physical payment . Clay Presnell Memorial Park on Old Plank Road in Seagrove.

The event was sponsored by Trees Seagrove and Acres for the Atmosphere in connection with the N.C. Zoo. Volunteers arrived at 8 a.m. and planted 130 trees before they finished up around 4 p.m.

The event included an educational booth about polar bears, food and refreshments for volunteers and live music performed by Eck McCanless. Trees NC provided the food and refreshments from the concession stand in the park, operated by Carolina Bats. Proceeds will go toward management of the park.

People of all ages from Seagrove, Asheboro and neighboring communities helped with the planting. Kane Martinez of Asheboro, who is 13, was one of the youngest volunteers. He planted 14 trees Saturday.

“I volunteered because I want to help save the planet and protect Seagrove from greenhouse gases,” said Martinez.

Trees for the event were provided by Trees Seagrove and Acres for the Atmosphere through fundraisers, grants from Randolph Friends of the Zoo and the American Association of Zoo Keepers, and through the generosity of Green Biz and Gilmore Plant & Bulb Co. Inc.

Trees Seagrove and Acres for the Atmosphere representatives said they held the event for several reasons, one of which was to help reduce the carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere that cause global warming.

According to the Polar Bears International (PBI) web site (www.polarbearsinternational.org), global warming causes sea ice to melt, which threatens the polar bear habitat; it reduces the bears’ hunting season and can leave them stranded on land.

Acres for the Atmosphere was created by graduates of the 2009 PBI Zoo Keeper Leadership Camp. The program works with chapters of the American Association of Zoo Keepers, zoos throughout North America and PBI Arctic Ambassador Centers. They plant trees and help educate the public about the environmental benefits of planting trees.

One of those graduates, Marissa Krouse, is a zoo keeper at the N.C. Zoo. According to Krouse, each chapter of Acres for the Atmosphere tries to plant an acre of trees each year.

“Most of the things we do to combat climate change also benefit us,” said Krouse.

The benefits of planting trees in urban environments include improved water quality, reduced energy use, diverse wildlife habitats, and increased quality of life for residents, according to a news release from the USDA Forest Service.

Education was a big part of the “Picnic & Planting.” Seagrove Elementary School students participated in a poster contest before the event about the role trees play in combating global warming. Contest winners had trees planted in their names. Polar bear-shaped plaques — created by potter Bonnie Burns, who is also a member of Trees Seagrove — mark the locations of these trees.

Children and adults were invited to learn more about polar bears and conservation efforts from Melinda Prior, a member of the N.C. Zoo’s education department, at the zoo’s “All About Polar Bears” booth.

Community involvement also played a big role in the planting. Trees Seagrove is a community branch of Trees NC, which was founded as Trees Asheboro seven years ago by Owen George and Tim Womick. The goal of the organization, which has expanded to include local branches like the one in Seagrove, is to have citizens work together as tree advocates in their communities, according to the web site, www.treesnc.org. Trees NC.

Before the event, Trees Seagrove member Mike Walker dug holes for trees with a backhoe. Volunteers planted more than 20 varieties of trees.

“We needed something to bring the town together and I feel like this is a great start,” said volunteer Katherine Hewitt of Seagrove. “This is good for people in Seagrove. They can be proud of what they’ve done today.”

“There’s nothing as fulfilling as planting trees,” said Burns, “and seeing the neighborhood turn out for the future of our children.”

• • •

Information about volunteering or starting a community branch of Trees NC can be found at www.treesnc.org. Over 100 trees have been slated for planting around the existing sign, the walking path, children's play area and concession stand. With the help of Mike Walker's auger, holes will be dug for volunteers to fill with Red, White,Scarlet and Willow Oaks, Red buds and Dogwoods just to name a few.

The planting has a double theme. Not only will the Park be more beautiful but the leaves will produce more oxygen, which in turn will help combat global warming.

Seagrove School will conduct art contests in conjunction with the global warming theme . Prizes of pottery plaques decorated with the winner's name will be awarded as well as permanent plaques to adorn the trees. The winning artists will be able to plant their own trees and watch them grow as a living legacy to nature and the environment.

Music, information booths and concession stand food will round out the day as volunteers work to plant the new Grove.

Trees and Atmosphere for Seagrove

Hot, Hot, Hot! The weather has been way too hot to plant but not to plan. Trees Seagrove has been hard at work planning when and how to plant trees and further beautify the Clay Presnell Park in Seagrove. A lot of good ideas were introduced and discussed then given to Bob McCory from the NC Zoo to draw up a tentative site plan .The bulk of the plan was focused on increasing visibility for the Park entrance . It is on a deeply sloping hill and all that can be seen from the road is bare ground and a sign. Dogwoods , Redbuds and flowers will be added to increase visibility and awareness of the Park.

The site plan was presented to the Seagrove Town Council on 8/3/2010 by Trees Seagrove member Bonnie Burns. There were several questions about placement and suggestions to put more focus on the picnic area and the playground. There are no trees at all to shade the kids playing or families having a snack which places as much need there as at the entrance. After some discussion , the Town Council voted to approve the offer by Trees Seagrove to plant and beautify but with an altered site plan.

The month of October was selected for the actual planting because the weather tends to be cooler and it is easier to keep newly planted trees watered. Mike Walker, Trees Seagrove member, graciously offered to dig all holes with his auger to conserve time and blisters.

Trees Seagrove wants to partner with the Town and as many groups as possible to plan a festive tree-planting week-end. Hopefully, this will encourage all of Seagrove to come out and re-acquaint themselves with the Park or see it for the first time. Contacts and plans are being made now and details will be relayed when they are finalized.

If you want to help or have ideas, please use the blog contact and we will get back to you ASAP.

Trees Seagrove Hand-in-Hand with New Grocery Store

Trees Seagrove presented a proposal to the Seagrove Town Council on June 29th asking permission to plant trees in and around Seagrove but primarily in the Clay Presnell Park. At the same meeting , Brown Eyes Investments received permission to start planning the proposed grocery store that everybody in Seagrove is so eagerly awaiting. The Town Council made a motion to incorporate both proposals into one so that Trees Seagrove could use some of its trees to fulfil the "green area" required by the Town ordinance.Talk about being in the right place at the right time !

Trees Seagrove is excited to be the catalyst between Seagrove and Brown Eyes Investments to help do what is often overlooked but important in all new construction. Both beautification and landscaping will be accomplished by donating free trees and the labor to plant them. The trees are waiting patiently and being cared for at the NC Zoo.They will find permanent homes in the Fall after the Summer heat subsides and all parties decide on the best placement.

As the trees grow and provide osmosis to turn CO2 into O2 the atmosphere will get a needed boost. Customers will appreciate a shady spot to park their cars and wildlife will be encouraged to make new homes. The world will be a better place because of human cooperation .

Looking Forward to the Fall

Trees Seagrove was lucky to be included in the Acres for Atmosphere tree planting event that took place on Saturday,May 15,2010. The event was organized by Marrisa Krouse and Bob McCrory from the North Carolina Zoo in conjunction with Polar Bears International (PBI). Planting trees will create more oxygen in the atmosphere to help combat the rising level of carbon dioxide ,the major cause of melting Polar ice and Polar Bear habitat.

During the day, trees donated by generous , concerned businesses and citizens were planted by hand in and around the acreage on Fork Creek Mill Road in Seagrove by volunteers from the NC Zoo and Trees Seagrove. The heat and hard ground made it impossible to plant all the donated trees but about thirty five were wrestled into place by determined volunteers. The left-over trees were taken back to the Zoo to be cared for until a better planting time in the Fall.

During the event, several other sites in and around Seagrove were discussed as possible planting sites such as the Clay Presnell Park and the intersection of Broad Street and NC Highway 705.Trees Seagrove was asked to look around their town and find other areas that could use "sprucing" up. Any Seagrove-area resident that is interested in having a tree planted in their yard or has a suggestion please contact Trees Seagrove .The only requirement for planting the trees is permission from the Seagrove Town Council or property owners and, of course, cooler Fall weather!

Spring Clean Up in Seagrove

Ten members of TreesSeagrove, a chapter of TreesNC gathered early Sunday morning 4/10 to clean up and spread mulch at the North Carolina Pottery Center in downtown Seagrove. The mulch was obtained by Seagrove local, Bobby Marsh. Marsh is the president of the Seagrove Area Potters Association, which voted last October to support the TreesSeagrove Chapter. Marsh owns Marsh Pottery and while working for the Seagrove Ulah Water District, noticed big brush piles from Progress Energy tree trimming efforts. The tree trimmers are more than happy to recycle the trimmings into green mulch and drop it off locally, cutting down on gasoline consumption and landfill dumping.

The idea to help beautify the North Carolina Pottery Center was generated at a March meeting of the TreesSeagrove chapter. The Seagrove community is proud to be home to the award winning Museum and Educational Center, whose mission is to promote public awareness and appreciation of the history, heritage, and ongoing tradition of pottery making in North Carolina.

TreesSeagrove spokesman, Mike Walker commented, “It is important to us to present our best image to the public and tourists who are so important to our local economy. We want to do our best to take care of community that we live and work in and do so by volunteering our time and resources.” Walker supplied the heavy equipment that made the mulch spreading job go much faster.

The spring clean up was accomplished just in time for 2 big April events, the Celebration of Spring in Seagrove the 17th & 18th and the North Carolina Pottery Center Annual Auction to be held on April 25th.

Richard L.
